| Become a $YRF Organizer Before becoming involved with the SYRF program, Christina was a member of a social theater troupe at Oberlin College in Ohio that worked to educate students about sexual health and relationships. She was always interested in religion but was bothered that extremist activists seemed to have the corner on religious messages about reproductive rights and craved an outlet for her pro-choice, pro-faith values. She was eager to combine her spiritual identity with her passion for reproductive justice in order to bring together students who were interested in a pro-faith approach to pro-choice organizing...so she became a SYRF organizer and gets to do what she loves and make a little extra cash, too! Now Christina is getting ready for her second year as a SYRF organizer at Oberlin. She's looking forward to putting together a semester of exciting events about these important topics... | | Alabama Reproductive Freedom Summer New Mexico SYRF activists Marshall and Ambrosia made their way to Alabama to help defend the New Woman, All Women clinic from anti-choice protestors last month. Here is an excerpt from their reflections: When we arrived in the clinic by cab, it occurred to me what that image was to the anti-choice protestors present: two young 20 somethings, getting out of a cab together, one male and one female, in front of an abortion clinic. I never asked Ambrosia about the things that we heard, or if she heard them. I heard screams that enraged me. "Don't do it, don't kill your baby, he did this to you, you're a slut, he made you a slut. . ." within seconds of getting out of a cab. Read more about Marshall's experience in Alabama on the SYRF blog. | | Jail Time The August 6 issue of Newsweek features a fabulous article by Anna Quindlen which asks the question: How much time in jail should a woman face for having an illegal abortion? The article can serve as a great conversation starter on your campus or the subject of a posting for the SYRF blog. Read the article, view the YouTube film mentioned in it, then let us know what you think! | Back to School Swag Are you planning to table at your school's Welcome Week activities fair? If not, consider it! Welcome Week is a great time to engage with first year students who haven't heard about SYRF's work and reconnect with active students from last year. We'd love to hear about your plans and send you a back to school package filled with SYRF goodies, so let us know if Welcome Week tabling is in the works. | | | | | SYRFs Up! The political scene in Washington is heating up (along with the 99 degree temperatures and humidity). The Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice just announced the creation of a Public Policy department and speakers bureau. This is very exciting news for SYRF as we will really be able to amp up our advocacy work! It's back-to-school time...almost...and I am trying to distract myself from the temptation of buying new school supplies (for no real reason, mind you, I have graduated and can't take part in the school supply fun) with some exciting SYRF projects. We're putting the final touches on our Regional Training Institutes and are almost ready to unveil the new and improved SYRF website and online community (e-mail us for a sneak peak). Watch your in-boxes in the coming weeks for more on both of these items. Until then, have fun back to school shopping and we'll see you at a Regional Training Institute soon...
