Regional Trainings: Apply Today!

bannerIt's finally here!  Yes, the news is true: SYRF Regional Training Institute (RTI) registration is upon us.  Visit the new section on our website to learn more about the Institute and complete a registration form.

The SYRF Regional Training Institute is an activist and organizing training program that will take place in four cities across the country between October 2007 and March 2008.  We will be making stops in DC, Atlanta, San Francisco, and Chicago.

Each training will feature intensive skills sessions preparing participants to galvanize community support for reproductive justice in a faithful context.  Trainings will be led by experts in the fields of organizing, religion, and reproductive justice.  Session topics include event planning, communications, theology, personal leadership development, and more.

SYRF Regional Trainings are completely free to accepted participants.  Registrations for the first training in Washington, DC are due before October 8, 2007 so apply today!

Meet a SYRFer

Mimi M. is a SYRF Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) Member and the Program Coordinator for the Youth Activist Network at Advocates for Youth (A4Y).  As a new YAC member, Mimi looks forward to incorporating her e-advocacy skills and passion for reprodctive justice into SYRF projects.  She says that the most exciting part of her involvement with the YAC is getting to use her creativity to bring out the creativity in others so that they are empowered to take actions that are effective and attention-getting (check out this link for an article about some of Mimi's most memorable organizing efforts).

Mimi became very involved in the reproductive justice movement as an activist and leader while she was in college.  Her time at the University of Maryland (go Terps!) was marked by a strong commitment to the Student Global Aids Campaign and Advocates for Youth.  She says she particularly enjoyed working with these two organizations because "as a young person, they always wanted to hear from me."  This is part of why she is so excited to be working to empower other youth as a member of SYRF's Youth Advisory Committee.

When not working, Mimi can be found at a a Belle and Sebastian show or enjoying a falafel sandwich.

If you are working to incorporate faith into reproductive justice advocacy and want to be featured in a future edition of the SYRForecast, please let us know!

SYRFs Up!

I am thrilled to introduce our first ever SYRF Regional Training Institute.  We have been hard at work nailing down details and are looking forward to seeing the applications roll in.  Please let us know if you have any questions about the trainings or suggestions for the program content.  We hope to see you at one of our four training stops (DC, Atlanta, San Fransisco, and Chicago)!

All the best,

The Faithful Struggle for Reproductive Justice is a short, 15-minute DVD that tells the story of the Clergy Consultation Service on Abortion, the forerunner to the

Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice. Shocked by the injuries and death resulting from unsafe, illegal abortions before Roe v. Wade, a group of clergy led by Reverend Howard Moody formed the Clergy Consultation Service on Abortion to counsel women and refer them to safe abortion providers.

This video is an excellent tool to introduce your congregation, community, or campus group to the early history of the reproductive justice movement. A study guide is included to facilitate discussion.

Download the study guide here and e-mail us to request a FREE copy of the DVD.
