Emergency Contraception
Also known as "Plan B" or the "Morning After Pill"

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved over-the-counter (OTC) access to Plan B® emergency contraception for women 18 years and older on August 24, 2006! This is a hard-fought and well-deserved victory for women and women’s health advocates who have worked tirelessly for OTC approval of this safe and effective method of preventing pregnancy. While this is a triumph for most women, young women 17 years and under are left behind.

EC is a safe, concentrated dose of ordinary birth-control pills that reduces the risk of pregnancy up to 89 percent if taken within 72 hours after unprotected intercourse. If widely available, EC could prevent thousands of unplanned pregnancies and abortions every year.

Campus Organizing Ideas

Set up a table packed with information about EC in high traffic areas like the student center or dining hall. Host a workshop or speaker in the dorms to educate students and staff about how EC works and our struggle to get it over available the counter. Create a poster campaign aimed at women under 18 reminding them to get a prescription for emergency contraception to have on hand when needed! More Ideas
